Final composite of three frames from the firework display in Briar Hill neighborhood in Oldham County.
This photo contains the firework burst that compelled me.
This photo has the subjects in the foreground illuminated to give scale to the 50 foot United States flag that was suspended between two trees.
This is the final photo used for the [...]
Mike, left, and Kristen graciously oblidge the photographers for a portrait shoot at dusk with the castle in the distance.
The twenty-first century can make anything possible. Ten years ago if you told me people would be getting married in a castle in Kentucky I would have laughed. Yesterday I witnessed one, actually photographed it.
Amid the [...]
My friend and colleague at The Decatur Daily Emily was married down in Georgia a few weekends ago. It was great to get to see a lot of the folks we used to work with and spend time away from the day to day back in the ville.
Luster poses at the 2004 U.S. Senate primary in Frankfort
There are a great many story within the 5′4 mountain of a man most just call “Luster.” He walks onto an assignment and either performs a “surgical strike” or recently on an assignment for Time for Kids, “We busted it, Palmer!” Whether photographing a Career Fair [...]
This year I worked for the Lexington Herald-Leader and The New York Times during the weeks and days leading up to Derby 136. It involved many mornings starting at 5:30 a.m.
So a guy in an Astro Van pulls up to my sister the other day at a stop light, her kids in tow. Windows down and attentive ears listening, ole dude busts out a “Cutie Pie” serenade (girl let me holla) for my sister. Later that day I was hanging with the [...]
My colleague David recently allowed me to make him a website with photos from the 2010 SEC Men’s Basketball Championship. We spend 4 days in Nashville photographing 11 games. Doesn’t sound like a lot for a Kentucky photographer but it was a pretty big production since we were working for the SEC.
Friday my wife, and Black Bear founding member of TeamCoyle went for a stroll through the Daniel Boone National Forest. While much of the monolithic ice formations had melted or fallen down there were plenty of good photo opportunities.
ESPN College Gameday rolled into Lexington and gathered an impressive crowd to watch what amounted to 40 minutes of television.
“You guys are crazy!” UK Men’s Head Basketball Coach John Calipari said. 24,000 came to Gameday and at 9pm 24,000 came to watch UK play Tennessee. Kentucky won 73-62. John Wall had 24 points and was 9-12 from the charity stripe.
While on assignment today at the Capitol in Frankfort I stumbled upon an interesting scene. There was a lizard that had been frozen from the cold temperatures and a ladybug near the west side of the building. After shooting my assignments I decided to waste time using my macro lens to make photos of the [...]
My colleague David Coyle recently acquired a Canon Mark IV. He has been shooting mostly strobed action at UK men’s and women’s basketball games in Lexington. This past Saturday he went to the Lancaster Aquatic center for the UK senior day swim meet. After processing the images he, as I, was amazed at the number [...]
Georgia Aquarium patrons make photos of Nettlefish Thursday, Dec. 4, 2009.
Danielle and I are taking a respite from Kentucky and visiting some friends in ATL. We were able to enjoy a relatively empty city on Friday. Despite the SEC football championship game between Florida and Alabama.
Students on a class trip watch fish in the Ocean [...]
This past weekend I was sure history was going to be made. I was correct, UK was handed its 25th loss in a row to the University of Tennessee. There was a glimmer of hope near the end of the game but was quickly squandered away. In the overtime period UK’s defense was no match [...]
Danielle was able to come with to Nashville this weekend for the UK vs. Vandy football game. She was my assistant meaning she would calm me down when I was heated after I missed a photo or the lack of action made me cranky.
Today we traveled to Franklin, Tn., for some shopping and local flavor. [...]

I was fortunate enough to get a call from The New York Times to shoot a story about University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari. I sent some file photos I have made of Cal during the past few months, made a portrait of the athletic director Mitch Barnhart [...]
Darius Miller, left, is critiqued by head coach John Calipari during a break in the action.
A Wall-less UK men’s basketball team started their ‘09-’10 season with in state division three powerhouse Campbellsville in an exhibition Monday night.
Coach Cal made adjustments from the bench all night. His dribble-drive philosophy was not executed to his liking Monday [...]

Lou posing with the 40 pound, 51″ Muskie | Photo by Neil Kaufman
I missed a phone call from Lou yesterday, he was at Cave Run Lake. Nearly frantic and out of breath he was lamenting the fact that I was not with him to document [...]

Pam signs a stack of books for the bookstore to sell.
Poised, passionate, and patient
-Words that describe Pam Spaulding as a photographer.
Photojournalist Pam Spaulding has spent the last 30 years documenting the everyday happenings of a Kentucky family. Her new book AN AMERICAN FAMILY: Three Decades with the McGarveys offers an [...]
David S. and I shot a wedding on Saturday. I kicked it with the groom most of the morning but jetted to the reception site to help my partner with some bridal portraits (he made one that is killer). The slide show in this post represents just a few photos of the thousands that were [...]
My friend David and I shot a wedding on Saturday in Lexington. The groom and his family are from Scotland and many of them made the trip to Kentucky for the ceremony. Wearing kilts and being announced by bagpipe the ceremony was a mix of classy and patriotic. There are many more frames in David’s [...]
